How this works — method, assumptions & data sources

Method: annual gallons × propane energy content × current-system efficiency = the heat your home needs. Divide that by (seasonal COP × 3,412 BTU/kWh) to get the electricity a heat pump would use. Then price both sides. Results are shown as a range because heat-pump seasonal efficiency is uncertain.
